Nursing, a life changing opportunity

One of the best decisions of my life was choosing to pursue my bachelor’s degree in nursing at Bellin College. For the last several years I have worked as a Spanish Medical Interpreter & Translator for Bellin Health System which has provided me with the amazing opportunity to be involved in a variety of patient teaching opportunities, surgical procedures, discharge teaching, and much more. Throughout this time I developed many professional working relationships with many healthcare professionals including physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, social workers, and much more, who motivated me and encouraged me to pursue a nursing degree. Being exposed to so many medical procedures, and having some medical background helped ease my transition into Bellin College.

Besides teaching invaluable information that served as the foundation for my nursing career, Bellin College has impacted my life both personally and professionally. On a personal level, I have learned to become more compassionate, more tolerant of other’s views, and to have a better appreciation for my health and my family’s health. All of the achievements and challenges I faced while studying at Bellin College has provided me with a sense of accomplishment, confidence, and pride that truly contributes to my well-being and that of my family.

On a professional level, Bellin College has equipped me with all of the necessary tools to perform nursing care that reflects efficient, safe, compassionate, and quality care. Throughout all of the clinical experiences, I realized the complexity of this profession. Nursing goes way beyond passing medications and cleaning wounds. I learned to show more empathy, learned the value of kindness, and humility, and also the importance of prioritizing the time to care for myself.

This experience allowed my thinking to expand to consider other ways of doing things which I never had before. It also helped me realize that even though people may look different, they have the same desires, feelings, and hopes I/we do.

I feel very honored and grateful to Bellin College for providing me with this life-changing opportunity, and for allowing me to impact the lives of so many women and children.

Gracias Bellin College faculty for believing in me, for the continuous words of encouragement and support, and for pushing me to never give up!
