Julie Whitman Dream Scholarship
To
address the ongoing need to improve the diversity of the Physical Therapy Faculty workforce in the United States. The Julie Whitman Dream scholarship will provide a method of support for under-represented minorities who demonstrate leadership in the PT profession and are engaged within their community. The aim of this scholarship is to empower program participants who are under-represented minorities by giving them an opportunity to advance their career through post-professional advanced education. This is a tuition reduction scholarship in the Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy Program at Bellin College.
Julie’s Story
Dr. Whitman is a graduate of the US Air Force Academy and went on to pursue her master’s in physical therapy from the US Army-Baylor PT program in 1994. Julie went on to receive further advanced training and received her Doctor of Science in PT from Baylor University in 2001. Following this time, Julie has published 40+ peer-reviewed manuscripts, and over 30 published abstracts in the areas of orthopaedics and manual physical therapy and presented research both nationally and internationally at professional conferences. She was the recipient of the AAOMPT’s Kaltenborn “Teach I Must” Award, the JOSPT George J. Davies – James A. Gould Excellence in Clinical Inquiry Award, AAOMPT Outstanding Research Award, and Steven J. Rose Excellence in Research Award.
In 2008, Julie started what is now known as the Bellin College Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapy Program with Evidence in Motion. She led the program for 10 years and oversaw the development of over 100 graduates of the program. In September of 2018, the program moved from Evidence in Motion to Bellin College. Julie became the program director for both the fellowship and new Doctor of Science program at the College where she created the opportunity for fellowship graduates to continue their education towards a terminal doctoral degree. Julie stayed in this role until early 2019 before transitioning to be a full time homeschool teacher for her children.
Over this time, Julie has taught, inspired and created opportunities for many people she interacted with. She has paved the way for so many to reach their dreams both professionally and personally. This scholarship will continue Julie’s legacy of creating opportunities for those wishing to expand their horizons.

Scholarship Details and Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Tuition reduction up to $1000 per year depending on number of applicants
- Current Bellin College DSc student in first 2 years of the program
- Demonstrated Professional Leadership and Community Service
Under-represented Minority Definition:
Our working definition of an underrepresented minority (URM) is someone whose racial or ethnic makeup is from one of the following:
- African American / Black
- Asian: Filipino, Hmong, or Vietnamese
- Hispanic / Latinx
- Native American / Alaskan Native
- Native Hawaiian / Other Pacific Islander
- Two or more races, when one or more are from the preceding racial and ethnic categories in this list
