Course Description
This two-day onsite laboratory course is focused on practical, evidence-informed strategies for evaluating and treating people with persistent musculoskeletal pain. The course blends brief topical discussions about pain with focused and extensive partner practice to build clinical skills in sensory testing, graded motor imagery, pain education, motivational interviewing, and cognitive functional therapy. Participants will learn to integrate these approaches into real patient scenarios to improve reasoning, communication, and treatment planning. 

Appropriate Dress: Lab attire that allows for the ability to perform lifting movements of the lower extremities and trunk.

Objectives
Upon completing this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Apply the concepts of peripheral and central pain sensitization when managing patients with musculoskeletal pain disorders.
  • Perform quantitative sensory testing procedures in people with common pain conditions of the spine and extremities.
  • Apply graded motor imagery strategies for people with persistent pain conditions of the spine and extremities.
  • Communicate evidence-informed pain neuroscience strategies when educating people with musculoskeletal pain disorders.
  • Apply motivational interviewing strategies to empower people with persistent pain conditions.
  • Apply cognitive functional therapy strategies for people with persistent pain conditions of the spine and extremities.

Note: Participants will be responsible for submitting proof of attendance for CEU verification. Bellin College has CEU approval for this course for 16 hours.

Schedule
DAY 1

  • 8:00-8:15 a.m. – Intro/Welcome
  • 8:15-9:00 a.m. –Assessment of Yellow Flags and Lifestyle Behaviors
  • 9:00-10:30a.m. – Motivational Interviewing Skills Review and Practice
  • 10:30a.m.-Noon – Pain Neuroscience Education Review and Practice

LUNCH       

  • 1:00-2:30p.m. – Quantitative Sensory Testing lab
  • 2:30-4:00p.m. – Graded Motor Imagery lab
  • 4:00-5:00p.m. – Case Integration and Round Robin

DAY 2

  • 8:00-9:30 a.m. – Communication/Pain Education Round Robin Lab
  • 9:30a.m.-10:30a.m. – Cognitive Functional Therapy
  • 10:30a.m.-Noon – Case Application – Spine

Lunch    

  • 1:00-3:00 p.m. – Case Application – Upper Extremity
  • 3:00-5:00 p.m. – Case Application – Lower Extremity
