Course Description

Refine your skills in evidence-based evaluation and treatment techniques for common cervicothoracic conditions during this two-day, hands-on lab course.

Using a person-centered, integrative, and evidence-informed approach, participants will strengthen clinical reasoning and decision-making through discussion-based learning and laboratory experiences. The course emphasizes hands-on examination, individualized evaluation, manual physical therapy, therapeutic exercise, patient education, and guideline-based clinical decision-making within an autonomous, collaborative, and person-centered framework.

Appropriate Dress: Please wear lab attire that allows for assessment and treatment of the neck and thoracic spine.


Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of common cervicothoracic disorders.
  • Demonstrate assessment strategies for common neck disorders.
  • Apply evidence-informed treatment strategies for common neck disorders.
  • Synthesize clinical information to guide clinical reasoning when treating a person with neck pain.

Contact Hours and CEUs

Participants will earn 16 contact hours.

Note: Participants are responsible for submitting proof of attendance for CEU verification. Bellin College has CEU approval for this course for 16 hours.


Course Schedule

This two-day lab course includes hands-on instruction, clinical reasoning activities, and practical application of evidence-informed techniques.

Day 1 Schedule

8:00–8:30 a.m.  Building the Clinical Picture: Structuring Your Subjective & Red Flags

8:30–10:00 a.m.  Cervical Mobility Exam Lab

10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.  Cervical & Thoracic Thrust and Non-thrust / Mobility Exercises

LUNCH BREAK

1:00–1:30 p.m.  Cervical Radicular Symptoms: History and Clinical Reasoning

1:30–3:00 p.m.  Exam for Radiating Symptoms Lab

3:00–4:30 p.m.  Neural Mobilization, Manual Techniques for Radiating Symptoms, and Exercise Lab

4:30–5:00 p.m.  Clinical Reasoning in Action: Technique Case-Based Practice & Feedback

Day 2 Schedule

8:00–8:15 a.m.  Technique Practice: Mobility and Radiating Symptoms

8:15–9:00 a.m.  Treating the Whole Person: A Framework for Persistent Neck Pain

9:00–10:30 a.m.  Persistent Neck Pain Exam: Integrating a Pain Science Approach Lab

10:30–11:45 a.m.  Treatment for Persistent Neck Pain: Individualized, Evidence-Informed Strategies

11:45 a.m.–12:00 p.m.  Technique Practice: Pain Science, Mobility, and Radiating Symptoms

LUNCH BREAK

1:00–1:15 p.m.  Movement Coordination Deficits: Identifying the Presentation

1:15–2:00 p.m.  Assessment for Movement Coordination Deficits Lab

2:00–3:30 p.m.  Interventions: Motor Control and Targeted Exercise Progressions

3:30–5:00 p.m.  Clinical Reasoning in Action: Technique Case-Based Practice & Feedback
