Eleanore “Honey” & Emery Ansorge Endowed Scholarship
Emery Ansorge and his late wife, Honey, believed in helping others – a philosophy that inspired the creation of this scholarship at Bellin College. Eleanore and Emery believed they must do all they can for the youth of today in order to build a better world tomorrow. Their kindness and generosity has touched so many lives. The Eleanore and Emery Ansorge Scholars will carry on this legacy of giving.
Ansorge Family Endowed Scholarship
The Ansorge family is devoted to helping others. Together, with their daughters Karen Ansorge, Kimberly Ansorge, Janet Ansorge and Lynne Gorlinsky, the family’s benevolence has made an impression on many lives. Emery Ansorge began the Ansorge Family Scholarship at Bellin College with a seed gift. His goal was to demonstrate that a family scholarship can be established not only by those capable of making a singular donation, but also by those committed to establishing a foundation upon which to build.
Francis & Georgia Ariens Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Francis Ariens, along with his father and two brothers, co-founded the Ariens Company in Brillion, Wis. As president of the foundation, Francis established the Leon H. Ariens Scholarship in memory of his brother. To continue the Ariens family’s commitment to educational excellence, the Ariens Foundation Ltd. created the Francis & Georgia Ariens Scholarship.
Leon H. Ariens Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Leon H. Ariens co-founded the Ariens Company in Brillion, Wis. with his father and two brothers. What began as a basement operation grew to become an international manufacturing business with sales in 25 countries. Truly dedicated to the Ariens Company, Leon remained involved with the corporation until his death in 1965. The Leon H. Ariens Scholarship was established by the Ariens Foundation, Ltd. to recognize Leon’s devotion to family, his astute business sense and his strong sense of civic responsibility. Recipients of this scholarship strive to maintain these qualities and uphold the commitment to excellence demonstrated by Leon.
Dr. Stephen Drake Austin Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Fulfilling a childhood dream, Dr. Stephen Drake Austin became an established Green Bay obstetrician and gynecologist who, throughout his career, delivered more than 10,000 babies. The Bellin College community benefited from Dr. Austin’s commitment to nurses and education. He taught high-risk prenatal labor and delivery, and allowed nursing students to use his clinic for prenatal clinical experiences.
He touched many lives throughout the years. They, in turn, have paid tribute to him through the creation of the Dr. Stephen Drake Austin Memorial Scholarship, which has continued to grow steadily since his death in 1986.
Patricia W. Baer Endowed Scholarship
The Patricia W. Baer Scholarship was created by Mr. Richard Baer and Mr. Charles Baer in memory of their mother. Patricia was respected for her long-term commitment and service to Bellin College, and to providing educational opportunities to those in need. As a former educator, she placed a high value on education. She always believed Bellin College provided an outstanding opportunity for Northeast Wisconsin students to pursue a life-long career in healthcare.
Patricia was a member of the Bellin School of Nursing Advisory Board for many years and was instrumental in the development of the baccalaureate nursing program. As a founding board of trustees member of the College, Patricia served as secretary from the time of its creation in 1983 until her retirement from the Board in 1988. She became the third trustee emeritus of Bellin College in 1989.
Frederick E. & Patricia Baer Endowed Scholarship
Frederick and Patricia Baer dedicated their time, leadership and support to diverse community projects. They have been guided by the philosophy of L.G. Wood, Patricia’s late father, who said, “When life has been good to you, you should return these gifts to your fellow man and the community.” The scholarship they created at Bellin College exemplifies that approach.
Fred served on the Bellin Hospital board for more than 25 years. Patricia was a member of the Bellin School of Nursing’s advisory board for many years and was instrumental in the development of the baccalaureate nursing program. As a founding board member of the College, she served as secretary from the time of its creation in 1983 until her retirement from the board in 1988. Patricia became the third trustee emeritus of Bellin College in 1989.
Fred served as co-chair of Bellin College’s $2 million endowment campaign, which exceeded its goal. This endowment positioned the College for future service by stabilizing and diversifying its funding. Frederick and Patricia Baer Scholars will embody the intention of the Baer’s gift, encouraging high-quality nursing care.
Bellin Health System, Inc. Auxiliary Endowed Scholarship
The Bellin Health System Auxiliary had been the lifeblood of volunteer activities that benefit the entire Bellin community. The auxiliary served Bellin Hospital from 1987 to 2006. Future scholarship dollars are stewarded by the Bellin Health Foundation.
Auxiliary members were visible through their management of both the Gift Shoppe and Backstreet Espresso (coffee shop). Their profits helped purchase critical hospital equipment. They also staffed the information desk, delivered flowers to patients, conducted pediatric tours, worked reception areas in surgery, took photos of newborn babies, transported patients and provided many other hospital services.
Other fundraising efforts included flower, book and jewelry sales, and a style show. The proceeds benefited both endowed and annual scholarships for Bellin College students.
Gerri Bellin Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Gerri Bellin shared her enthusiasm for life and fun with everyone until her untimely death in January 1997. A member of the Bellin School of Nursing, Class of 1970, Gerri received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay in 1986.
Gerri married her husband, Andy, in 1970 and had two children, Jennifer and James. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Congregation and Altar Society; a member and past president of the Casco Lioness Club; helped the local Girl Scouts program and was active in the Bellin College Alumni Association.
The highlights of Gerri’s life were her family and career. She started at Bellin Hospital and held various positions, but primarily worked as a staff nurse on the surgical floor. Gerri delivered bedside care in a warm, compassionate manner with outstanding critical thinking. She was highly respected by all, including local surgeons who initiated this endowed scholarship. Her friends and classmates share many wonderful memories of this remarkable woman, known dearly by those closest to her as “Ger-Bear.” She is dearly missed.
George Bennett Memorial Scholarship
In 2007, Bellin Hospital lost George Bennett, a long-time employee in the advanced care department. During his illness, George expressed a desire to establish a scholarship to support continuing nursing education for his peers. With the overwhelming support of colleagues and friends, the George Bennett Scholarship was formed. Each year, Bellin College awards a scholarship to a nurse who meets the set criteria and is enrolled in the bachelor of science degree program.
Dr. Thomas & Louvain Beno Family Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Thomas Beno has been a well-respected surgeon in Green Bay for many years. He retired from his practice in 1987, yet still continues to support the healthcare community with the Dr. Thomas and Louvain Beno Family Scholarship. As a native of Green Bay, he is a graduate of East High School and St. Norbert College. He received his doctor of medicine from the University of Wisconsin Medical School.
Dr. Beno began his practice in Green Bay in 1957 and was active in the medical community throughout his career. He has been a member of several professional associations. He served as president of Bellin Medical Staff in 1969 and was a member of the Bellin Hospital board of directors from 1970 to 1972. He served as president of the Wisconsin Surgical Society from 1982 to 1983. He also served as a member of the President’s Club and the board of trustees of St. Norbert College and as a member of the Green Bay Board of Education, serving as president of the board in 1973 to 1974. In 2000, Dr. Beno wrote Tom’s Odyssey, a self-published autobiography.
His commitment to education and Green Bay’s healthcare community is continued through this named scholarship. Because of his commitment, Bellin College graduates will continue to make a difference in people’s lives.
Bleser Family Endowed Scholarship
In appreciation of the unselfish caring and concern provided by the nursing profession, Clarence Bleser began this scholarship several years ago to help others pursue a career in this noble profession. Although he has passed away, Clarence’s legacy will live on through this memorial scholarship.
Clarence’s family is very pleased to be able to memorialize him by supporting education and charitable activities that benefit our community.
Dr. Alvin H. & Helen Brusky Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Alvin Brusky retired in 1982 after practicing medicine in the Green Bay area for more than 50 years. He was a general practitioner and surgeon in an era before there were specialists. He practiced in an era where home calls were the norm, malpractice insurance was a couple hundred dollars a year and the family doctor was a revered figure.
Dr. Brusky worked his way through school at Marquette University by working as a barber. He was the first in his family of thirteen children to go on to higher education. He helped pay for the medical education of two brothers, a son, a nephew and several other area residents. It is this same generosity that has inspired this scholarship.
Bush Family Endowed Scholarship
M.G. and Ruth Bush shared a commitment to family, which was the cornerstone of their values. Devoted to their two sons, Robert and Richard, and daughter, Virginia, they established a standard of excellence which is evident in the undertakings of all members of the Bush family. M.G.’s 17 years of service on the board of directors of Bellin Hospital and Bellin College reflected his interest in and commitment to healthcare and nursing education. Through the Bush Family Scholarship, established by family and friends, the tradition of excellence and personal success embraced by this exemplary couple will endure.
Richard & Joyce Bush Endowed Scholarship
Richard and Joyce are making dreams come true by continuing the example set by Richard’s parents, M.G. and Ruth Bush. Their support helps make Bellin College’s high quality nursing education affordable, so today’s students can become tomorrow’s nurses. The Richard and Joyce Bush Scholarship is an example of their devotion to the community and the Bellin tradition.
Jim & Gerry Christoph Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Jim was the former senior vice president of administration and finance, and secretary of Paper Converting Machine Company – a designer and manufacturer of converting machinery for the paper, film, foil and disposables industries.
Jim served as chairman of the Bellin Hospital and Bellin Health System boards. Central to Jim and Gerry’s lives is their son, Dick, and daughter, Mary Villwock. The family belongs to the Methodist Church, where Gerry is an active volunteer.
Jim played a critical role in securing the future of the College through his active membership on Bellin College’s endowment campaign cabinet. Jim and Gerry strongly believe in the value of education and the nursing profession. Jim passed away in March 2014 and Gerri in June 2019.
Condon Family Endowed Scholarship
Gerald “Cort” Condon is a long-time member of the Bellin College Board of Trustees, having served on the Board at Bellin Health also. Through his expertise, he has helped the college grow through the years and assisted in gathering the support needed in creating a stand-alone campus, seeing it become a reality in 2009. Because of his close involvement with the health system and Bellin College, Cort knows the value of a good education and the impact graduates have on the communities they serve. It is through this endowed scholarship that he helps Bellin College students reach their goals.
Joseph M. & Jeanette B. Conway Memorial Endowed Scholarship
When asked to describe why she created a scholarship at Bellin College, Jeanette B. Conway responded “because Green Bay is a medical center!”
The need is great for dedicated, professional nursing care, which Bellin College provides. Helping inspired students achieve their goals is a worthy cause, and this scholarship was created to support that cause.
Family members include Dr. John D. Conway (retired) and Dr. Michael J. Conway of Phoenix, and a granddaughter, Joan Conway, RN, of Milwaukee.
The Joseph M. and Jeanette B. Conway Memorial Scholarship also exists at Marquette University in Milwaukee, St. Norbert College in De Pere and Heritage Hill Preservation Fund in Green Bay.
June Demske Memorial Endowed Scholarship
June Naomi Etmanczyk Demske graduated from Bellin College in 1947. By the age of 5, she knew she wanted to be a nurse, bringing home wounded birds and cats to nurse them back to health. She spent most of her career as a Pediatric nurse at Bellin Hospital. She had a photographic memory and could recite the morning report on her patients without any notes. At home, she was the nurse to her children, her husband and to wounded animals on the farm. She then received additional training to work as a diabetic counselor at two clinics in Green Bay. After retiring as a nurse/diabetic counselor, she worked as a caretaker at a home for those afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease. Several of her children and grandchildren have followed her footsteps into healthcare careers. Her seven children have established this scholarship in her memory.
Donald & Joyce DeNamur Endowed Scholarship
The creation of the Donald and Joyce DeNamur Scholarship was rooted in a lifetime of helping others and a long relationship with Bellin Hospital.
Their four children, three sons and a daughter, were born at Bellin Hospital. Joyce was an active member of the Bellin Hospital Auxiliary and contributed more than 35,000 volunteer hours in her decades of service to Bellin. In her volunteer role as manager and buyer for the Bellin Gift Shoppe, she provided a heartwarming smile and kind words to many staff and patients each day. Joyce passed away on Feb. 9, 2015.
A Korean War veteran, Donald was a firefighter for the City of Green Bay. His compassion for helping others led to him graduating with the first class of licensed paramedics in Green Bay. Retiring at the rank of deputy chief in 1989 after 34 years of service, he went on to volunteer for the Lakeland Chapter of the American Red Cross for many years. Donald passed away Dec. 16, 2013.
A shared desire to financially assist students pursuing an education in the healthcare profession resulted in the establishment of their endowed scholarship at Bellin College in 2013.
Vince & Gerry Devroy Endowed Scholarship
Gerry Devroy was a native of Green Bay and a 1939 graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing. She worked in a hospital and as a visiting nurse before attending the University of Michigan where she obtained her public health degree. Gerry worked in public health in Eau Claire and Manitowoc, Wis. In 1947, she married her husband, Vince, and worked as a Brown County public health nurse until her retirement in 1967. Gerry had a great love for animals, was an avid golfer and reader, and enjoyed spending time with her friends until her death in September 2008.
Vince Devroy, also a native of Green Bay, worked as an analytical reporter for Dun & Bradstreet and with Morley Murphy Co. briefly before becoming an investment broker for Citizens Securities Co. He retired from that business in 1981. His recreational pursuits include golf, swimming and reading. Their commitment to quality healthcare is demonstrated by this generous scholarship.
Easter Foundation, Inc Endowed Scholarship
Bruce and Carol Bell, through the Easter Foundation, have established this endowed scholarship to support tomorrow’s healthcare leaders. As the founder of Belmark, a leader in the labeling and packaging industry, Bruce feels one of the most exciting things he can do is see people grow, develop, and become leaders. Through Bruce and Carol’s support, they are making this business goal come true for Bellin College students.
Edelblute Founder’s Endowed Scholarship
After his passing in 2000, Dr. Lyle Edelblute established the Edelblute Founder’s Scholarship. The contribution established a permanent scholarship that provides assistance to radiologic science students on an annual basis.
In 1957, while chief radiologist at Bellin Hospital, Dr. Edelblute founded the Bellin School of Radiologic Technology because of the growing need for radiologic technologists in the area. The school was originally a two-year school housed in Bellin Hospital, but the program evolved to a four-year bachelor degree program at Bellin College in 2009.
Myron & Harriet Elliott Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Myron and Harriet Elliott Scholarship Fund was established by their children and extended family to honor their love of and commitment to education.
Myron and Harriet were successful business owners who dreamed of establishing a scholarship in their name, so a young person could acquire the formal education they had longed for growing up. Harriet chose Bellin College because it is an institution she believed in and because of its historical relationship with Bellin Hospital and dedication to serving the Green Bay community.
Myron and Harriet were committed to Northern Wisconsin, where they worked and lived together until Myron’s death in 1970.
Eugenie Hruza Erdman Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Eugenie Hruza Erdman, class of 1962, was dedicated to her nursing profession, working in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin during various times in her life. Her motto was “Your ability, your care, with prayer.” She was also an active member of the YWCA and avid bridge player, but was best known for her devotion to her husband, children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. This scholarship, as well as a classroom at Bellin College, honors her memory and continued support of Bellin College students.
Robert & Ramona Etter Endowed Scholarship
Bob and Ramona believed in the importance of education and helping others. These values lead to the establishment of the Robert and Ramona Etter Scholarship.
For more than 15 years, Bob served as president and chief executive officer of Nicolet Paper Company in De Pere. Philip Morris, Inc., which owned the mill, subsequently named him president of the Philip Morris Paper Group.
Family, church and community were central to Bob and Ramona’s lives. They had four children and eleven grandchildren. Bob served on the Bellin Health System’s board for more than 10 years. His leadership on the College’s board of trustees was acknowledged when he was named a trustee emeritus. Bob continued his commitment to the College by securing critical endowment dollars as a member of the campaign cabinet of Bellin College’s 1995 endowment campaign.
Bob and Ramona’s benevolence served as the foundation for many of their undertakings. They have been long time friends and advocates of our nursing education program.
Emil & Gail Fischer Endowed Scholarship
The Emil & Gail Fischer Scholarship represents their commitment to education. Emil Fischer was the owner and CEO of Atlas Warehouse and Cold Storage, which is now known as Americold. He passed away in May 2014.
Emil and Gail were a few of the founding members of the Green Bay Botanical Garden. They also have made many leading gifts to several Green Bay area philanthropic organizations and continue to support them through their charitable gift fund. They recognized Bellin College’s quality of education and commitment to the community, and their gift gives students the opportunity to pursue their careers.
Bernice “Mac” Fleck Endowed Scholarship
The Bernice Fleck Scholarship was created in honor of the nursing profession. Bellin College was always high on Bernice’s list of interests.
Bernice “Mac” Fleck graduated from Bellin School of Nursing in 1935, thanks to financial sponsors she had while studying to become a nurse. If it had not been for the financial support she received, Bernice wouldn’t have been able to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse – a dream she had spoken about since the age of 3. Through the creation of the Bernice Fleck Scholarship, future nurses will be able to live out their dreams as well.
In addition to the creation of this scholarship, Bernice Fleck had supported the efforts of Bellin College as a volunteer for many years. Bernice passed away on July 6, 2012.
Gertrude R. Goelz Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Gertrude Goelz had a deep love for the nursing profession. In 1939, she graduated from the Deaconess School of Nursing in Milwaukee. She met John Goelz while he was attending medical school at Marquette, and they married when he was a resident at St. Louis University. Gertrude worked as an RN in St. Louis and, upon completion of John’s residency, they moved to Brillion, Wis. and began their first practice. Four years later they moved to Green Bay where, together, they opened the De Pere Clinic and later the Goelz Clinic. She was committed to nursing and believed in compassionate, high quality care.
The same qualities that made Gertrude such a loving, caring nurse also made her a wonderful mother to her four children. After beginning her family, Gertrude became a member of the The Brown County Auxiliary of Nurses. As a volunteer, she worked on community blood drives and as a nurse volunteer at the Wisconsin State Reformatory. Gertrude was blessed with many God-given talents and valued her education. She shared these gifts by being of service to her patients, family and community.
The Gertrude Goelz Scholarship has been established to help future nursing students obtain a quality education. This will enable them to be a part of the nursing profession that Gertrude loved and served so well. Ruth V. Goelz (Dr. John Goelz’s sister) and the Goelz family are honored to provide this scholarship to Bellin College in Gertrude’s name.
Dr. John Goelz Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Like his wife, Dr. John Goelz had a deep love for the profession of nursing and the advancement of healthcare careers. Dr. Goelz practiced medicine for 45 years – four in Brillion, two in De Pere and 39 years in Green Bay. He was the president of the Bellin and St. Vincent Hospital medical staff, and also president of the Brown County Medical Society.
Dr. Goelz passed away in January 2013, and he will be remembered for his dedication to family, community and profession. This scholarship was created in his memory to help future healthcare providers receive quality education in the Green Bay area.
Renelle Goergen Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Renelle Goergen was a 1993 alumna of Bellin College. Upon her death in 2005, she bequeathed a scholarship to the College to help others become nurses.
Green Bay Packers Foundation Endowed Scholarship
The creation of a scholarship at Bellin College by the Green Bay Packers Foundation assures continuance of community tradition – a hallmark of the Packers’ locally supported projects. The Green Bay Packers Foundation Scholarship helps Bellin College provide professionally educated healthcare providers through the provision of ongoing scholarship support.
Groendahl Nursing Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Raymond Groendahl remembered the needs of nursing students in his last will and testament, as did his sister, Elvira Groendahl. For many years, Dr. Groendahl practiced in Seymour, Wis. and later in the emergency room at St. Vincent Hospital.
It was the desire of Dr. Groendahl and Elvira to provide assistance for incoming students. The Groendahl Nursing Scholarship has been established to carry out their wishes.
Brannon & Chris Guyette Family Endowed Scholarship
Brannon and Christina are pleased to offer the scholarship to a Bellin College student as the College has been so instrumental in their personal and professional development. They believe that the College trains and prepares students for the career opportunities that lie ahead, and they are proud of their affiliation with the organization.
Ferd & Arlene Haevers Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Ferdinand Phillip Haevers was a husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend. He was born Feb. 14, 1917 and died June 17, 1995.
“That man is a success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.”
Originally created in Ferdinand’s memory, this scholarship was changed in include his beloved wife, Arlene, when she passed away in 2005. Arlene was an educator for more than 40 years. She believed strongly in higher education and helping others. By funding this scholarship, she did both. They are both loved and dearly missed.
Haise Family Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Bellin College’s graduates have touched the lives of the Haise Family of Chilton, Wis., and, in return, they are touching our student’s lives with this scholarship. Edward Haise, who died in 1993, bequest the creation of a nursing scholarship at the College.
When Ella Haise passed away, followed by Esther Haise, they both created annual scholarships through their wills to help educate Haise Family nursing scholars. These gifts will continue the family legacy as Haise Scholars practice their nursing profession in the future.
Harold & Laura Halloin Knospe Endowed Scholarship
Laura Halloin Knospe, class of 1931, created an endowed scholarship in her name and that of her late husband, Harold. Fond memories of her Bellin nursing education and of her work as a professional nurse led to this very generous gift to her alma mater. It provides scholarship support to Bellin College nursing students on an annual basis.
Laura’s father, Dr. Louis J. Halloin, practiced in the family home, which contained a general office and rooms for examination, consultation and mixing medicines. She viewed nursing firsthand as her mother cared for those patients. She began her nursing education in fall 1928 and graduated with a diploma in nursing in 1931.
After graduation, Laura started her career as a private duty nurse at Bellin Hospital. Later, while practicing in Algoma, she met Harold whom she shared her life with for 45 years. Harold passed away in 1983.
Laura’s interest in helping students who want to work with heart patients grew because several of her family members have experienced heart problems.
Charles & Lois Hanaway Endowed Scholarship
Charles & Lois Hanaway were long time friends of Bellin College. After World War II, Charles started his own law firm and had such a passion for his work that he didn’t retire until his 80th birthday. Lois, after attending Bellin College of Nursing for a short time, stayed close to healthcare through her work on the St. Vincent Advisory Board and as a volunteer for the St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary. She gave her time and compassion to many groups in her community, including the YWCA, Service League and Antiquarian Society. Lois started the Charles Hanaway Memorial Scholarship after her husband’s death in 2000 at age 91. Lois continued to support Bellin College for many years and passed away in 2012 at the age of 95. As part of the Legacy Society, she remembered Bellin College in her will, giving the gift of scholarship for many years to come.
The Honorable Donald J. Hanaway Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Honorable Donald J. Hanaway Memorial Scholarship was created in recognition of the passion for education he embraced throughout his life.
Don’s professional accomplishments were many. He was a co-founder and partner in the Green Bay law firm of Condon, Hanaway, Wickert, and Fenwick, Ltd. from 1969 to 1986. He served as mayor of the City of
De Pere, was the De Pere city attorney, and was a prosecutor and special prosecutor for Brown County. He was the 2nd Senate district’s state Senator from 1979 to 1986. While in the Senate, Don served as assistant minority leader and chairman of the Senate Republican economic development committee, among other
committee appointments.
In 1987, Don became Wisconsin’s 40th attorney general, serving until 1991. In July of 1991, he became a circuit court judge in Brown County, Branch 4 – a position he held until his death. Donald’s wife, JoAnn, MSN, RN, was an assistant professor at Bellin College for 18 years.
It is the wish of Don’s family that his life be an inspiration to others. Knowledge and new challenges were a driving force in Don’s public and private life. It is only fitting that a scholarship be established in his name. Hanaway Scholars will carry on his commitment to knowledge, professional excellence and community involvement.
Elmer M. & Elaine A. Hansen Endowed Scholarship
The Elmer and Elaine Hansen Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 and is dedicated to the nursing field and the growing importance of healthcare throughout the country.
The couple’s children and grandchildren were born at Bellin Hospital, an important Bellin College connection. Elaine passed away in July 2014.
Dr. Loren & Marian Hart Endowed Scholarship
Marian and Loren met at Evanston Hospital in 1950, where she was a student nurse and he was a senior at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. Loren and Marian have four children: Richard, a teacher; Tom, an architect; Barbara, a nurse; and Lori, a nurse practitioner.
Marian’s mother was also a nurse, and her father was in general practice in a small town in Michigan. Loren grew up in a small town in Ohio, where his father was a dentist.
Loren interned at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and completed his radiology residency at Crile V.A. Hospital in Cleveland. After two years as chief of radiology at Ft. Leonard Wood Hospital in Missouri, they moved to Green Bay. After arriving in 1958, Loren joined Dr. Lyle Edelblute in radiology at Bellin Hospital.
Loren was a president of the Brown County Medical Society. Marian was a president of the Auxiliary to the Medical Society. Over the years, they were active in the medical community and with church organizations and committees. The Harts felt a great need for, and gratitude toward, nursing schools and feel the Green Bay community is fortunate to have Bellin College. Dr. Hart had a warm spot in his heart for nurses and was happy to establish an endowed scholarship.
Elizabeth B. Hendrickson Endowed Scholarship
On the occasion of a milestone birthday, Betsy Hendrickson was surprised and delighted by a milestone gift from her husband and lifelong partner, Phil. Unbeknown to Betsy, Phil created a $100,000 Elizabeth B. Hendrickson Endowed Scholarship at Bellin College, a secret he shared with her in a private family celebration.
This generosity comes as no surprise to friends of Betsy and Phil. Commitment to others has characterized their lives. They have been integral to the growth of our community through their leadership and involvement in diverse organizations. The creation of the Elizabeth B. Hendrickson scholarship is another extension of their commitment to bettering others.
The Hendrickson’s actively supported the successful 1995 Bellin College Endowment Campaign and the 2009 capital campaign for the new Bellin College campus. Elizabeth passed away in March 2013.
Elizabeth B. & Philip J. Hendrickson Endowed Scholarship
Phil and Betsy Hendrickson were long-time friends of Bellin College. Phil graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison and went on to obtain his master’s degree from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He worked at Krueger Metal Products (now known as KI) from 1950 to 1985 and was a member of many boards and organizations in the community. He joined the Bellin College Board of Trustees in 1989 and was made trustee emeritus in 1996. In 1998, Phil generously gifted $100,000 to Bellin College and created the Elizabeth B. Hendrickson Endowed Scholarship on the occasion of a milestone birthday. They continued to help Bellin College, funding various initiatives such as: Bellin College Annual Golf Classic, Annual Cardiovascular Professorship Fund, International Student Fund, memorial funds and much more.
Betsy had a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse and applied to the University of Wisconsin-Madison nursing program, but was denied due to a heart murmur. She didn’t let that stop her and graduated with a degree in food chemistry instead. She worked for the Food and Drug Administration in Chicago before deciding to return for her graduate degree in chemistry at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. While in New York, her relationship with Phil grew and they were married in 1947. After moving back to the Green Bay area, Betsy worked for the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in the office of educational research and development and also spent time volunteering in the community.
Phil and Betsy raised their family in the Green Bay area with a strong belief in education, community and volunteerism. Betsy was very proud to have a scholarship in her name and considered it an honor to help young men and women achieve their goals at Bellin College.
After 65 years of marriage, Betsy passed away in March 2013. Phil established the Elizabeth B. Hendrickson Annual MSN Scholarship in 2015 to further help students at Bellin College. Phil’s gift to Bellin College at the time of his death in March 2017 created this scholarship and fulfilled his commitment to the Bellin College Legacy Society. Their philanthropy, caring and commitment to Bellin College is unparalleled and will live on in the Hendrickson scholars of the future.
Dr. Oliver & Lucyanna Hitch Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Dr. Oliver and Lucyanna Hitch Scholarship Award for Excellence was established by Engrid and Jack Meng in honor of Engrid’s parents, Dr. Oliver and Lucyanna Hitch. It is a tribute to the Hitch’s longstanding dedication to quality healthcare, nursing education and our community.
Oliver and Lucyanna’s legacy of volunteerism and community involvement has been sustained by the Meng’s, who have been involved in Habitat for Humanity and the American Cancer Society. Jack is retired chief executive officer of Schreiber Foods and former vice chairman of Bellin Health System and the Bellin Hospital Board.
The Hitches have made a lasting mark on our community. Oliver, a physician for 40 years, served as president of Bellin’s medical staff and also taught some classes at the school of nursing. Lucyanna, a registered nurse, was a driving force in the development of the baccalaureate program at Bellin College.
She was an emeritus member of its board of trustees and its former chairperson, as well as an advisory member of the Bellin School of Nursing. As co-chair of the Bellin College 1995 Endowment Campaign, she helped raise more than $2 million to help secure the future of the College. Lucyanna was a former member of the Bellin Hospital Board of Directors. In honor of her commitment to the College, its first honorary degree was bestowed upon her during the 1994 graduation ceremonies. Lucyanna and Oliver Hitch Scholars carry on their commitment to quality nursing and healthcare within the framework of excellence embraced by the Hitches.
Dr. Harold & Frances Hoops Endowed Scholarship
Gratitude and friendship inspired the creation of the Dr. Harold and Frances Hoops Endowed Scholarship. Fran was the beneficiary of a Moravian College Scholarship, which led to her degree in medical technology.
When a memorial scholarship was established at Bellin College in honor of Dr. Stephen Drake Austin, Harold’s good friend and sailing skipper, the Hoops decided to get on board. Harold passed away in 2010 and, as part of his legacy, his family remembered Bellin College. Harold and Fran served as class advisers for the Bellin School of Nursing. The Hoops family has always felt that Bellin College nursing students are wonderfully dedicated to caring for others.
Education is a priority in the Hoops family as evidenced by their three children. Their oldest son is a university biology professor with a Ph.D. in Botany; their daughter earned a Master’s Degree in Education and recently retired from teaching; and their youngest son is an anesthesiologist.
The Hoops family expresses their dedication and commitment to the nursing profession: “We are privileged to add to this tradition by this scholarship for Bellin College.”
Bonnie & Fergus Hughes Endowed Scholarship
Bonnie and Fergus Hughes have always had a special commitment to higher education in Wisconsin and a special connection to Bellin College.
Bonnie, a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB) graduate, worked as a counselor and supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and as a rehabilitation specialist for the State Office for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Fergus was a professor of human development and psychology and later dean of liberal arts at UWGB, where he had the privilege of teaching Bellin College students for more than 30 years. He also served on a committee that coordinated academic programs between Bellin College and UWGB, and served as a member of the Bellin College Board of Trustees.
Marie M. Janssen Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Marie M. Janssen’s generosity to Bellin College is outstanding. Her estate gift to the College exceeded $500,000 – the largest in the College’s history.
Marie, a lifelong resident of De Pere, was a longtime employee of Paper Converting Machine Company and was an associate of founder, L.G. Wood. Rising within the organization, she held the position of corporate secretary at the time of her retirement.
The specific use of Marie’s gift is undesignated. This provides ultimate flexibility for the board of trustees, the stewards of the College’s funds, to utilize her gift in the best interests of the College. The Marie M. Janssen Memorial Scholarship is awarded in recognition of her beneficence. It is with heartfelt thanks that the Bellin College community recognizes the resources her gift has provided to help ensure its viability and continue its heritage.
Dr. Wm. David & Mary Jones Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Wm. David Jones and his wife, Mary, are active community members and longtime supporters of Bellin College – providing scholarships to students for more than 20 years. Dr. Jones retired from the active practice of orthopedic surgery after 30 years with Orthopedic Associates of Green Bay. He is active in the support of the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he graduated with a doctorate degree in 1965 and has served on the alumni board institution for many years. Mary has been an avid homemaker, ventured into small businesses and worked with the hearing impaired – all while raising three sons.
The advancement of medicine and patient care are David and Mary’s priorities. They hope that top quality medical care will continue to be provided here in Green Bay in perpetuity. During the year, they divide their time between Green Bay and Rancho Mirage, Calif. “Summer in Wisconsin, and sunshine in the winter.” They continue to be ardent Packer fans in either location.
The establishment of a scholarship at Bellin College demonstrates their dedication to students and the community.
Ann Kapitz Endowed Nursing Scholarship
Ann has been a longtime friend and supporter of Bellin College students. For many years, Ann worked very closely with Phil Hendrickson and his involvement in Bellin College. Upon his passing, Ann decided to establish an endowed scholarship to keep that legacy going and to support future generations of nurses.
Nikki Kehm Memorial Endowed Scholarship
From the time she was a toddler, Nikki wanted to be a nurse. She would spend hours taking care of her dolls, pretending that they were her patients. On July 1, 2008, her life was stolen by a drunk driver. On her drivers permit, she had marked “organ donor.” The individual that killed her left her so badly injured her that her wish could not be fulfilled. Thus, her family honors her memory by helping others achieve their goal of becoming a nurse through the Nikki Kehm Endowed Scholarship.

Dolores Chaney Killins Endowed Scholarship
In a symbolic gesture, the Dolores Chaney Killins Scholarship was created by her husband, Dr. Jack Killins, on the occasion of the couple’s 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 13, 1991. Their gift of $50,000 represented $1,000 for each year of their marriage.
They believed that the well-trained nurse is a crucial member of the team in today’s multi-specialty approach to patient care. The scholarship was given in the hope that it will help more Bellin College graduates find a fulfilling and important role in nursing.
This scholarship visibly demonstrates Dee’s commitment to her profession – nursing. Further, it reflects Jack’s dedication to the healthcare profession, as he served as a surgeon for more than 50 years. Dee served on the Bellin Hospital Corporate Board and was president of the Brown County Medical Auxiliary. Jack’s leadership role in the community was recognized when he was appointed the first physician member of the St. Vincent Hospital Board of Directors. He served as president of both the Bellin and St. Vincent medical staffs, the Brown County Medical Society and the Wisconsin State Surgical Society.
Together, Dee and Jack served a critical role on the Bellin College Endowment Campaign Medical Cabinet. By securing support from the medical community, they helped further ensure the viability of the College.
Dr. and Mrs. Killins’ gifts to the community are many. This scholarship is a fitting tribute to a woman of integrity, a caregiver, a benefactor and a friend to many. It allows others to follow their dreams and become living legacies of Dolores Chaney Killins.
Bernard & Sally Killoran Endowed Scholarship
Bernard and Sally Killoran established an endowed scholarship because of their interest in education and the quality of teaching at Bellin College. Both dedicated their professional lives to education and young people. They know that at least one of Bellin College’s graduates in the class of 1998 was a student of Bernie’s when he taught on the west side of Green Bay. This scholarship was enhanced with additional monies at Bernie’s death in March 2010.
Lawrence Knutson Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Lawrence Knutson Memorial Scholarship was created with a bequest from his estate. His legacy speaks for him and his memory will stay alive through the work of the students who receive scholarships.
Ben Kramer & Alydia Braskamp Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Angeline Kramer established this scholarship in memory of her late husband, Ben Kramer, and sister, Alydia Braskamp. Mirroring how she lived her life, one of Angeline’s final acts recognized the importance of helping others through the creation of this scholarship in her will.
Angeline’s association with the Bellin community began in 1917. Her sister, Alydia Braskamp, was Dr. Julius Bellin’s nurse. After her marriage to Ben, Angeline worked in food services at the hospital and became a Volunteer Gray Lady. She was a long time member of the Bellin Auxiliary and was instrumental in helping to organize the Bellin Gift Shop, which is still popular today.
Angeline was a generous volunteer and touched the lives of many throughout her life. Angeline’s kindness, as well as that of Ben and Alydia, will be remembered in perpetuity through this scholarship award.
Alma Kuschel Endowed Scholarship
Alma Kuschel attended the three-year nursing program at Bellin College and, at graduation, joined the Nurse Corps in the Naval Reserves where she served in the Pacific areas of New Zealand and New Caledonia. Following her travels, she remained in the Naval Reserves, serving at hospitals on the east coast. After 30 years of service, she retired as a Lieutenant Commander and returned to Wisconsin. She was a great supporter of Bellin College nursing students and alumni. Her generosity and love for nursing knew no bounds.
Charles S. & Marcia L. Larsen Endowed Scholarship
Charles S. and Marcia L. Larsen’s interest in Bellin Hospital and Bellin College traces back to Charles Sumner Larsen Sr. and Amy Aplin Larsen, parents of Charles Sumner Larsen. Charles often said his claim to fame was that he was delivered by Dr. Julius Bellin. Chuck and Marcia Larsen served on the board of Bellin Hospital and, together, created their scholarship. It will continue to fulfill their goal of helping deserving students long after their passing.
Laurabell Larsen Endowed Scholarship
Charles and Laurabell Larsen were longtime friends of Bellin College. They gave through an annual scholarship in memory of their son, Steven, every year since his death in 1990. Laurabell expressed her desire to learn nursing when Steven started school, but never took the opportunity. With her donations to the College, Laurabell sent notes expressing how much satisfaction she received from helping students. She kept every note of thanks each student wrote her in the drawer by her bed and would read them often. Even at the end of her life, Laurabell made sure nursing students at Bellin College were assisted through the lasting gift of an endowed scholarship.
Andea Ziaimehr Lundt Endowed Scholarship
Andea was born in 1980 in Arden Hills, Minn., and decided she wanted to be a nurse in third grade. After looking at many nursing programs, she chose Bellin College. She spent most of her career working at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis and loved both nursing and working with veterans. Andea passed away in 2014 after a battle with Leukemia.
This scholarship was established in her memory by her parents, Hamid and Muriel; her husband, Donald; and her children, Cyrus and Ariana, to encourage students from outside of Wisconsin to study nursing at Bellin College.
Thomas & Lillian Lutsey Endowed Scholarship
Thomas and Lillian Lutsey’s humanitarianism is visible throughout our community. Their benevolence has touched those of all ages. Among their many generosities are: the Thomas H. Lutsey Youth Center in Green Bay; the acquisition of the Golden House, a shelter that provides counseling and other services for victims of domestic violence; and a Thomas H. Lutsey overnight cabin at the Fallen Timbers Environmental Center near Black Creek.
Tom provided leadership to Bellin School of Nursing as a long time member of its advisory board. When the College converted to a four-year baccalaureate nursing education program, he continued his association as a member of the board of trustees until his retirement in 1987.
Tom was recognized for his many contributions to the Bellin College community in 1988 when he was named a trustee emeritus of the College and Lillian’s role as friend and supporter were recognized as well.
Dale & Kay Lyndahl Endowed Scholarship
Dale and Kay decided to create a scholarship to honor their families. Dale’s father and mother started Lyndahl Funeral Home in 1946, and Dale bought the business in 1971. His first wife, Pat (1939-1988), was a past president of Bellin Hospital Auxiliary. Kay started as a volunteer in the Auxiliary in 1989 serving as president, chairing fundraisers and other duties within the hospital, and is now the Bellinteer newsletter editor for all the volunteers. Kay also was instrumental in starting the Bellin Hospital Auxiliary Endowment Scholarship for Bellin College of Nursing. She has been on the Partners of Wisconsin Hospital Association state board since 2005 and is editor of Reaching Out newsletter for all volunteers in the state.
Christina J. Maloney, LPN Memorial Endowed Scholarship
“Hi, my name is Christina. I’m your nurse and I’m going to take care of you.”
An enduring friendship between Bonnie and John Schafer and Christina culminated in the creation of the Christina J. Maloney, LPN Endowed Scholarship at Bellin College. When Christina walked into Bonnie’s hospital room, the Schafer’s learned that Christina was not just any nurse. She was Bonnie’s nurse, and they liked it that way.
Christina’s motto is “one person, one day,” recognizing that’s all it takes to make each day a good day. In recognition of the care Christina provided, and the special friend she had become, Bonnie and John created this scholarship in Christina’s honor. By doing so, they are assuring that every day is a good day, not only for Christina, but for the Maloney Scholars and the patients whose lives they touch. The scholarship carries forward Christina’s legacy of caring for the person and the patient.
Mary Lou & Edmund B. Manger Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The desire to memorialize Mary Louise Manger by the people she touched throughout her lifetime grew into the Mary Lou Manger Memorial Scholarship at Bellin College.
Born into a medical family in Nebraska, the family relocated to Appleton, where Mary Lou grew up. She pursued her educational goals at Beloit College, which provided the foundation for her professional goal of becoming a teacher. While a student at Beloit College, she met a classmate, Edmund Manger, who became her lifetime partner. Mary Lou became afflicted with a long-term illness. Eventually it required that she reside at San Luis Manor, where Edmund visited her daily. During that time, she was cared for by Bellin College nursing graduates
and students.
Upon her death in October 1991, the Mary Lou Manger Memorial Scholarship was created by friends and loved ones as a way to pay tribute to Mary Lou. In addition, the memorial created an opportunity for Bellin College students to follow their dreams of becoming professional nurses and serve the people in this community.
An estate gift, upon the death of Edmund B. Manger in 2004, was added to this endowment fund and it became the Mary Lou and Edmund B. Manger Memorial Scholarship.
Joyce A. McCollum Honorary Endowed Scholarship
On May 25, 2004, Joyce McCollum, MS, RN, retired as president of Bellin College at an event sponsored by Bellin Health Systems. She was recognized for her contributions to the Bellin Nursing Program and was presented with an endowed scholarship in her honor, funded by the many people she inspired throughout the years. The Bellin College family is truly a special part of her life.
Joyce’s love for education was inspired in her early years by her parents, other relatives, teachers and sometimes strangers. One of her missions has been to encourage others to reach their potential through learning in the classroom, as well as through the lessons of life and by giving to others. It is why she stewarded an annual scholarship program several years ago for Bellin College students.
Joyce began as a part-time instructor at Bellin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1971. She earned her Master of Science Degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 1975 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. In 1977, she began a full-time position as the senior year medical-nursing nursing coordinator and faculty member. In 1981, she became the assistant director. In 1988, Joyce was appointed dean and CEO of the College. Her title was changed to president and CEO in 1993. She completed all work, except the dissertation for a Doctorate in Educational Administration. In 2003, she decided it was time to spend more time with her family and moved toward retirement. Always humbled and honored, she became president emeritus of Bellin College on July 1, 2004.
Joyce feels it was a great privilege to have worked with faculty, staff, students, trustees and community members dedicated to excellence in carrying out the mission of the college for nearly 33 years. During her time with Bellin College, Joyce was always proud and appreciative of her colleagues accomplishments, making the college widely recognized in nursing education and the healthcare fields.
Margaret M. McKanna Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Margaret M. McKanna was born in Hubbard, Wis. to Reverend Sigmund H. and Hilda Sandrock. Margaret was a kind person who lived her faith every day. She graduated from Milwaukee Hospital School of Nursing in 1938 and served with the Milwaukee Visiting Nurse Association. In 1941, she married James B. McKanna.
Margaret spent her life in service to others and was a source of inspiration to her children and grandchildren. Margaret was foremost a loving homemaker and mother. In addition, she pursued her career in nursing, providing services and teaching at numerous facilities, including Bellin Memorial Hospital. She provided many volunteer hours to the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
In 1995, she moved to Oregon and carried on her long-term commitment to mission work at the Community of Hope Church. She enjoyed frequent outings and luncheons with the Women’s Circle. The creation of the Margaret M. McKanna Endowed Scholarship is a fitting tribute to her as a nurse and educator.
Robert T. & Betty Rose Meyer Endowed Scholarship
The Robert T. and Betty Rose Meyer Scholarship was created as an endowed scholarship built on the Robert T. Meyer Memorial Scholarship, which Betty supported for a number of years.
Characteristic of the Rose and Meyer families, Betty and Robert were leaders in embracing a vision, laying a foundation, and building a strong structure in family, business and civic undertakings.
Betty’s father, John Rose, served as treasurer of Bellin Hospital for many years. Her mother, Anne M. Rose, was a teacher forced to resign because of antiquated laws that prevented married women from teaching at that time. She shifted her efforts to civic involvement and enhanced the quality of life through numerous community organizations.
The vision and guidance of Robert T. Meyer led Tape, Inc., to its success. Both customers and employees knew Bob cared about them because he wasn’t afraid to show his warmth and kindness. Betty and their three daughters assumed ownership of the company upon Robert’s death in 1984, and Betty remained in an active leadership role until 1994 when she sold the company. She then used the proceeds to create the Robert T. and Betty Rose Meyer Family Foundation, which has greatly benefited our community.
Bellin College is in a much stronger financial position due to her generosity, and students benefit through the endowed scholarship. Additionally, along with her brother, John, Betty created the Anne M. and John Rose Memorial Arthritis Nursing Professorship in memory of their parents during the College’s 1995 endowment campaign, helping secure the future of our College. This support is critical to the lifeblood of this institution, keeping the pulse steady as it moves into the future.
Betty and Robert have made the College and the community a better place.
Dr. V. Jane Muhl Endowed Scholarship
The Dr. V. Jane Muhl Endowed Scholarship was established by family, friends, colleagues, the college and community upon her retirement in June 2011, in recognition of her contributions as president/CEO and professor of nursing at Bellin College from 2004 to 2011.
Perhaps the most notable accomplishment of the College under Dr. Muhl’s leadership includes the construction of the first stand alone college campus (2009) on 17 acres of land in the Village of Bellevue following a capital campaign that raised more than $8 million. Additionally, curriculum achievements included the introduction of a 15-month option to the baccalaureate (BSN) nursing program, a master’s (MSN) program in nursing and a baccalaureate (BSRS) program in the radiologic sciences.
A formal articulation agreement with St. Norbert College was implemented to compliment the long-standing articulation agreement with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. A department of alumni relations was established to recognize the valuable contributions of the more than 2,000 alumni of the College.
President Emeritus Muhl cites the richness of her experiences at Bellin College: “The opportunity to work with so many competent and talented colleagues, an excellent student body, a dedicated governing board of trustees, and a community supportive of the mission and values that Dr. Bellin inspired over one hundred years ago, has been a remarkable experience of which many professionals can only dream.”
Robert & Beverly Nelson Endowed Scholarship
Bellin College is fortunate to have loyal, dedicated friends who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the goals and vision of our nursing education program. Robert and Beverly Nelson are such friends. Bob’s efforts on Bellin College’s behalf were recognized when he was named a trustee emeritus of Bellin College in 1988.
The philosophy that drives him is simple. One must constantly strive to effectively serve the marketplace, but never lose sight of the value of fun. We share that conviction and incorporate it into the Bellin College community.
Bob is the founder and former president of Nelco, Inc., and is a retired attorney with the firm of Nelson and Schmeling. He has been involved with the National Railroad Museum for many years. He also played the violin in the orchestra for the Pamiro Opera. Beverly shares his passion for music and is a violin teacher. The importance of healthcare and nursing education is reflected in the creation of the Robert & Beverly Nelson Annual and Endowed Scholarships.
Nishioka Family Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Hiro Nishioka created the Nishioka Family Endowment. Funding began on an alternating basis for the Faculty Excellence Award, a student scholarship, and continuing education for a neurological nurse in the community. Funding for the Faculty Excellence Award, as well as the scholarship, then began on an annual basis.
Dr. Nishioka recognizes the importance of supporting faculty and student education. He has provided for permanent recognition of outstanding achievement through the generous fund he has created, which proudly bears his family’s name.
Outagamie County Voiture 1140 Endowed Scholarship
The sponsors of the Outagamie County Voiture 1140 Endowed Scholarship, “The Society of Forty Men and Eight Horses”, is composed of veterans of all conflicts in which the United States has been involved.
The Outagamie County Voiture 1140 Nurses Training Foundation was established in the early 1990s with the interest on the investments used for funding annual scholarships that were established in 1954. At least one, and occasionally more than one, scholarship has been awarded to high school graduates in Outagamie County or Wrightstown High School in Brown County who attend any accredited nursing program in the State of Wisconsin since that time.
In 2009, the membership voted to have Bellin College distribute the monies for this scholarship and, following their wishes, this has become an endowed scholarship awarded to students entering the College.
Lillian Rhines Peterson Memorial Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is funded by Bellin College graduate Karen Brukardt and named in honor of her mother, Lillian Elizabeth Peterson (1909-1989). Lillian grew up in rural Sheboygan Falls, Wis. From her childhood, she dreamed of becoming a nurse. However, her family situation and the economic condition of the United States in the late 1920s required her to take a job after high school. Consequently, her dream was passed along to Karen. One can only imagine the pride she felt the night of Aug. 19, 1966, when she watched Karen graduate from Bellin College. Karen has always been grateful to her mother for instilling in her a passion and high regard for the nursing profession. There is no finer way to continue to honor her mother’s life than to help young men and women fulfill their dreams and Lillian’s!
Dr. Phillip & Anna Philbrook Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Phillip and Anna Philbrook had generous spirits. They loved and supported other people, primarily in their roles as pastor and pastor’s wife, for 39 years. They felt it was their calling to help care for people’s spiritual needs.
In retirement, the Philbrooks moved from Indiana to De Pere to be closer to family. They were active, involved members in the community. They supported many charitable causes and were enthusiastic Packers fans. Phillip and Anna were also very close with their family.
The Philbrooks had a deep respect for the nursing profession and nursing education. Their daughter, Cindy Finesilver, taught at Bellin College for 20 years. Alan and Cindy Finesilver, Matthew and Avi Finesilver, and Betsy, Jim, Oliver and Annie Haberl, established this scholarship as a way to help care for people’s physical and spiritual needs. It is the hope of Phillip and Anna’s family that this scholarship will carry on their spirit of compassion and caring.
Dr. Louis D. Philipp Family Endowed Scholarship
Education is the most important goal an individual can have, and the Philipp Family is proud to be able to help individuals who want to better themselves through education.
Dr. Philipp worked hard to be able to attend the University of Wisconsin as an undergrad and through medical school. He completed his internship in Milwaukee and then served in the U.S. Air Force for two years. Following his service, he attended the University of Minnesota for five years in surgical residency. His educational experience is one he will cherish forever and is a top priority in the Philipp Family.
Dr. Philipp practiced as a surgeon in Green Bay for more than 30 years. Throughout those years, he experienced the giving nature of nurses. The Philipp Family is honored to give to nursing education in Green Bay, where they feel the nursing profession deserves to be nurtured.
Joyce Prust Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Joyce Prust graduated from Bellin School of Nursing in 1928. As an alumna, Joyce was an integral part of the history of Bellin College. Her diploma hangs proudly in the office of the College president today. As a member of Bellin College’s Legacy Society, her memory lives on through an endowed scholarship created upon her death in 2004.
Joyce was one of 17 graduates from Bellin School of Nursing in 1928. Ever the leader, she served as her class secretary and treasurer. Her pride in Bellin College continued throughout her lifetime. In 1998, she reminisced about how the College had grown since she graduated, noting that Dr. Bellin’s dream had surely come true.
Joyce recalled, “He would discuss his plans with the students about his work many times.” She lived to see his dreams come true. Through the Joyce Prust Endowed Scholarship, awarded annually, she is ensuring that dreams will continue to come true.
Joyce lived a full, rich life, sharing almost 43 years with her husband, Erwin Prust, until his death in 1972. She was active in the Bellin Health System Auxiliary and was a proud member of the Bellin College Alumni Association. Joyce worked at Bellin Hospital as a nurse. She briefly worked with her husband at Alwin Manufacturing Company before raising her family. She returned to nursing during World War II. After the war, she volunteered many years for the Red Cross blood bank, which required nurses to draw blood at that time.
While working and volunteering were important to Joyce, family was her priority. She and Erwin were the proud parents of; Richard, who died in infancy; Tom; and daughter, Phyllis.
Tom & Susan Prust Family Endowed Scholarship
The Prust family has been supporting Bellin College for many decades. Tom’s mother, Joyce, graduated from Bellin Training School for Nurses in 1928. Tom has served on the Bellin College Board of Trustees with continuous service since 2002. Tom, who was chairperson for six years, was instrumental in bringing the new campus to fruition. Tom and Susan have always been student centered and the lasting legacy of this endowed scholarship will ensure scholarship support for in perpetuity. Susan passed away in October 2012, and her memory lives on through the legacy of this scholarship.
E. Maude Reidenbach Endowed Scholarship
E. Maude Reidenbach, a kindergarten teacher, was a longtime Green Bay resident who championed education in the community. She graduated from
National Kindergarten College, located in Chicago, in 1917. This education laid the foundation for Maude’s teaching career, which spanned 42 years – 39 of them at Whitney School. She shared not only her love of learning with her students, but also her love of music. She retired in 1958. One of the oldest members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, religion played an integral role in her life. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.
Maude’s legacy will allow many students to fulfill their dreams of becoming professional nurses. The E. Maude Reidenbach Memorial Scholarship was created through a gift from her estate.
Barbara Richardson, RN Endowed Scholarship
Barbara Richardson, RN, greatly values the education and training received as a nurse. Providing that extra support for students at Bellin College acknowledges the integrity, dedication and financial need required to become a valued member of the health team.
Kathleen T. & Charles P. Riley Endowed Scholarship
Kathleen served as a trustee on the Bellin College Board from 1995 to 2017. She served as chairperson of the board from 2002 to 2005. Kathleen is a retired financial accountant who worked in public accounting and the paper industry. Charles is a retired commercial banker. They have a great passion for education and understand the financial challenges facing Bellin College students. Giving back to the educational community is a priority in their lives.
Meredith B. & John M. Rose Endowed Scholarship
The impact of Meredith and John Rose’s benevolence can be found throughout Northeastern Wisconsin. They have touched lives through countless contributions of advice, guidance and resources. As Green Bay natives, they view the community as their family.
John, like his father before him, served on the Bellin board of directors for many years. He also served as director on The Bellin Foundation Board and served in a leadership role in the College’s successful 1995 endowment campaign.
Learning of the increasing need for student aid, Meredith and John established an endowed scholarship at Bellin College. John and Meredith, along with John’s sister, Betty Rose Meyer, created the Anne M. and John Rose Arthritis Nursing Professorship during the 1995 endowment campaign. They also contributed to the Paul Ziemer Memorial Cardiovascular Nursing Professorship in memory of their dear friend, Paul Ziemer.
Through the Bellin Foundation, they created the Meredith B. and John M. Rose Health Sciences Library and the Meredith B. and John M. Rose Classroom on the Bellin College campus, serving not only our nursing students, but also physicians and the community at large. It would be impossible to completely capture their far-reaching impact in our region.
In an article in the Feb. 8, 1990 Green Bay News-Chronicle Publisher Frank Wood may have said it best: “No one I know has a deeper love affair with this town, and to the best of my knowledge, no one comes close to matching his involvement in the affairs and the future of Brown County. It is without parallel, and his honor is richly deserved.”
Rosemann Family Endowed Scholarship
Having spent most of his career at Fort Howard Paper Company, Russell Rosemann retired as the company’s chief financial officer and served for many years on the company’s board of directors. Meanwhile, Virginia raised their four children and was involved in myriad civic organizations. Having established the Rosemann Family Foundation in 1988, Russell and Virginia first supported Bellin College by contributing to the school’s capital campaign in 1995. Four years later, they established the Rosemann Family Endowed Scholarship fund, which continues to be funded through the efforts of their two daughters. Being a first-generation graduate, Russell knew, firsthand, the importance of education. Russell and Virginia both valued the services of doctors and nurses as one of their sons was born with spina bifida and had life long medical issues. Through these scholarships, the family hopes to ensure that Bellin College continues to educate highly skilled nurses to serve northeastern Wisconsin.
John L. & Naomi S. Ross Endowed Scholarship
John was involved in the paper products industry as vice president of the former Diana Manufacturing Company. He played an integral role in the growth and development of our business community, serving as president or board member of several businesses and community organizations. He was also involved in the establishment of the YMCA camp at Chute Pond and the Brown County Curative Workshop.
Naomi was instrumental in starting and served on Green Bay’s Social Action Board. She was also president of the local, then state League of Women Voters. In this latter capacity, she traveled abroad extensively, meeting with many foreign leaders.
Longtime friends of the Bellin community, John and Naomi contributed to the growth and development of the College. John served as part of the Bellin Corporation for many years. The establishment of the Ross Scholarship by their children recognizes their commitment to the nursing education program and its students.
The legacy of John and Naomi continues through the nursing care provided by the Ross Scholars of today who will become our nurses of tomorrow.
Carol Schmidt Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Carol O’Brien Schmidt was a Chicago native who graduated from Marquette University in 1968. She taught first grade and, along with her husband, Dr. Bob Schmidt Jr., raised three children in Green Bay.
Carol loved people and they loved her in return. She opened herself to many wonderful friends spanning the generations. Her entertaining stories and infectious laugh endeared her to many. Following her death from a cerebral aneurysm in 2001, this scholarship was established with gifts from family and friends for training in neurological care.
Scholarship of the Servant Heart
The donors of this scholarship embrace local and international mission work and desire others to share in the life-changing opportunities that volunteering can provide. This scholarship was created by an alumnus and her husband in hopes of encouraging future nurses to use their gifts and expertise to serve the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of their patients. “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people.” Ephesians 6:7
Daniel R. & Ruth E. Smith Endowed Nursing Scholarship
With Ruth at his side, Dan was the CEO of Bellin Health for 22 years between the 1960s and 1980s. A teacher at heart, the continued growth of Bellin College’s educational programs and the training of future healthcare professionals was at the forefront of his tenure. This scholarship continues his passion for Bellin College student success.
Mary Wertel Smits, RN, BSN, MSN, Endowed Scholarship
In 1956, a scholarship from the Elks Club in Green Bay enabled Mary Wertel Smits to attend the Misericordia School of Nursing in Milwaukee. She went on to enjoy additional professional preparation and a successful, enjoyable career in nursing. Mary wanted to give back to Green Bay area students seeking careers in nursing. She appreciated the opportunity to do so through the excellent program at Bellin College.
Esther Randolph Soeter Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Esther Randolph Soeter was the daughter of a construction supervisor and graduated from Trenton State Teachers College in Trenton, NJ. She was married for 65 wonderful years to a clergyman. They had three children; one a nurse and one a physician, and ten grandchildren. The Esther Randolph Soeter Memorial Scholarship was created to help students attain a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
Throughout her life, she had an impact on the lives of many as a public speaker and teacher, holding various offices in regional organizations. She had many friends and lived a good life until her death at age 89.
Dr. John Soeter, who founded the scholarship in memory of his mother, says that nurses have enabled him to work professionally at Bellin Hospital for more than 20 years. He could always count on nurses to be supportive in both good and difficult times. Throughout his career, he learned a lot from their dedication, caring and professional attitude.
The Esther Randolph Soeter Memorial Scholarship makes it possible for more students to become the cornerstone of medical care — a nurse.
John & Mabel Stiles Memorial Endowed Scholarship
John was a graduate of Lake Forest Academy, a 1936 graduate of Dartmouth College and a graduate of the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. He was associated with the Morley-Murphy Company in Green Bay since 1936 as a director, president and chairman of the board.
Bellin Hospital was served by John in many capacities for nearly 40 years. He was elected to the corporation in 1953 and to the board of directors from 1954 to 1978. He served as secretary, vice president and president during his 14 years on the executive committee. Other contributions made through board committees include: working with finance and insurance, building and capital expenditures, the heart program and the foundation. John was a member of the Bellin Corporation until his death in 1992.
According to the couple, “Why is Bellin College important to us? Why is it important to me? Because we are natives of Green Bay and, throughout our years, Bellin has been an important part of our lives from the time of the births of our three daughters and at numerous other times. Experienced professional nurses with great expertise and loving care have been a great contribution to our community. We want others to have the same privilege and opportunity of becoming nursing professionals, so that other patients can share the same experiences we have had with loving and professional care.”

Sharon Reistad Thomas Distinguished Scholarship
I am pleased and proud to be a Bellin graduate. My Bellin education made a significant contribution to my professional and personal success. I am hopeful that the young men and women who receive my scholarship will be able to look back on their years at Bellin as I do.
For the first two years after graduation, I was an OB/GYN staff nurse at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and attended classes at the University. I married my high school sweetheart in 1963. When he completed his master’s degree we moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where I accepted an assistant nursing instructor position at the Methodist Kahler School of Nursing.
In 1966 we moved back to Madison, Wisconsin, where my husband pursued a Ph.D. I gave birth to our twin daughters and became a full-time wife and mother. When Richard completed his Ph.D., we moved to Phillips, Wisconsin, where he accepted the position of executive vice president with Marquip, Inc. As the wife of a traveling business executive and a mother of two active twin daughters, I had little time for nursing; however, I did find ways to remain active. I became a Red Cross Blood Mobile RN volunteer, participated in the UW Inactive Nurses Teleconference Network, and served as a trustee on the local hospital board. I also joined the board of directors of Marquip Inc. and was a consultant to the company in the associated areas: wellness, physical exams, drug screening, and health education.
In conclusion, I want to say that in keeping with the Thomas family emphasis on the importance of a quality education, I am pleased that I can give back to the institution that gave me so much.

The Audrey Thorpe Memorial Scholarship was established through an estate gift. Audrey Thorpe was committed to education. Through her estate, she is helping educate nurses in perpetuity. This will ensure that Bellin College can continue to offer the high-quality education that has benefited our community and beyond since 1909.
Lois Van Abel Memorial Scholarship
Lois Van Abel worked for Bellin Health as the Director of Care Coordination, until she lost her battle with leukemia in 2021. Lois believed in three simple, yet powerful, principles throughout her professional career: 1. Have a genuine passion for the career that you choose…no matter what it is, 2. Sincerely and fiercely care about the people you work for and with and value each person as an individual, 3. Always strive for continuous improvement, in yourself, in others, and within the organization.
Additionally, Lois believed in the power of community and stewardship and showed this through her involvement with various community non-profit boards and as a Deacon in her church. Lois’s passion for what nursing could bring to a community role modeled and inspired others to continue their education, work toward advancement, and most importantly, give of themselves to others who may need a helping hand during a rough patch in their lives.
Most importantly, Lois balanced her passion for nursing with love for her family. There was no greater joy in her life than being with her family and she spoiled her grandchildren unapologetically! As a nursing leader, Lois recognized the importance family played in creating support and joy and encouraged those around her to make time in their careers to also enjoy family and friends. This zest for life, love, and caring about others was and still is an inspiration to those fortunate enough to have known her.
Mike Van Asten Endowed Scholarship
Mike Van Asten, owner of Liberty Hall Conference Center in Appleton and a number of Hilton Hotel properties, is a strong supporter of higher education. He hopes this scholarship award helps a Bellin College student achieve his or her dream.
Joseph & Sarah Van Drisse Endowed Scholarship
The Antoinette “Toni” Motiff Vannes memorial fund was established by the Vannes family for Bellin College students following in the footsteps of Toni, who was a remarkable role model as an RN and through a life well lived.
Toni attended Bellin School of Nursing and graduated from the certificate program in 1959. She married her high school sweetheart, Clayton Lee Vannes, on Jan. 27, 1962. Toni’s career took on many changes as she moved every two to three years, traveling the world as a military wife and mother of four daughters: Victoria, Robin, Amy and Heather.
Upon her return to the United States, Toni completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Maryland in 1985 and graduated Summa Cum Laude. She worked for eight years as the assistant director of nursing at the Fairfax Nursing Center in Virginia from 1985 to 1993. During this time, Toni was diagnosed with breast cancer and received treatment while she continued working. In 1993, Toni and Lee moved to Odessa, Fla., where Toni retired from nursing and enjoyed the warm weather and time for her many projects.
Toni was diagnosed with cancer again in 2000. She again received treatment, but God chose to take her to his home in January 2003. She was a grandmother to five granddaughters and three grandsons.
The establishment of the Antoinette “Toni” Motiff Vannes Scholarship provides much needed financial assistance to nursing students. The personal and professional life of Toni provides inspiration to those students to serve the people in this community with the same deep commitment to nursing and the same degree of caring that she gave to those entrusted to her care.
Warren R. & Mary L. Von Ehren Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Mary was born in 1916 in a small, southern Illinois town where her mother was the local school teacher. She graduated from Peoria State Hospital School of Nursing in 1937. In 1941, prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mary enlisted in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant nurse with a dash of adventure to practice nursing in a new setting.
Warren, born in 1921 and raised in Chicago, completed undergraduate studies at Northwestern University in June 1941. He planned to spend the year working as a research assistant, but the attack on Pearl Harbor interrupted his plans.
Warren and Mary met while serving in England, where he was the operations head of an army hospital and she was a nurse. In 1944, they were located in southern England, receiving some of the first casualties the D-Day Invasion brought back over the English Channel. Their hospital advanced to France and Germany as the Allies moved across Europe. In May 1946, the couple returned home to be married in the chapel on the Northwestern campus with two friends as witnesses. Warren soon began his graduate degree work in hospital administration at Northwestern.
In 1953, while president of Bellin Hospital, Warren reinstated the Bellin School of Nursing, which had closed temporarily. Mary served as Warren’s advisor, giving insight into the development of the nursing program. He served as president of Bellin Hospital until 1960. He then became president of the Wisconsin Hospital Association, working there until retirement in 1986. They both maintained a deep commitment to healthcare and education, Warren as an adjunct professor at UW-Madison until age 85 and Mary in numerous healthcare-related volunteer activities. Mary maintained her nursing license until she passed away at age 90. Warren passed away in 2010.
The Warren R. and Mary L. Von Ehren Scholarship was created by their family. Their legacy lives on through this scholarship and the Bellin College Presidential Suite is named for them.
Byron L. Walter Family Endowed Scholarship
The Walter family prospered through the many business and entrepreneurial undertakings of Byron, the family patriarch. Through the creation of the Byron L. Walter Family Trust by Arlene, daughter of Byron and his wife Minnie, their legacy lives on. The trust’s mission to benefit the people of Brown County began when Arlene died in 1979.
Byron moved to Green Bay in 1898 to become a plumber’s apprentice. He formed a partnership in 1906 to establish a new hardware and sheet metal company, which became Green Bay Hardware, Inc. in 1927. He served as its president until his retirement in 1953. He also served as president of Paper Converting Machine Company in Green Bay, a position he held until his death. His entrepreneurial spirit also led to his involvement in many successful real estate and business ventures. Minnie supported Byron’s diverse enterprises, and together they treasured their only child, Arlene.
The Byron L. Walter Family Memorial Scholarship honors Byron, Minnie and Arlene — three individuals whose contributions to the community are interwoven in the history of Brown County.
Harriet Bower Warnemuende Endowed Scholarship
The Harriet Bower Warnemuende Endowed Scholarship was established through her estate to provide scholarships for nursing students at Bellin College. The scholarship strives to help students achieve a nursing career in a high-quality healthcare environment.
Michael Wilde Memorial Scholarship
On July 2, 2006, Bellin Health lost a longtime colleague and a compassionate caregiver when Michael Wilde succumbed to his battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mike graduated from Bellin College in 1984 and began a 22-year career with Bellin Health. As a bedside nurse and later a leader in the Bellin Medical Group, Mike contributed much to the lives of patients, family members and his coworkers. He was dedicated to the core principles and mission of community-based healthcare.
In the last few months of his life, Mike expressed a heartfelt desire to establish a scholarship to support the dreams and wishes of young people interested in nursing. With a generous gift from Mike, and the overwhelming support of colleagues and friends, the Michael Wilde Scholarship fund was formed.
Each year, two nursing scholarships are awarded: one to a student enrolled in Bellin College or NWTC and one to a graduate from Monroe High School (Mike’s alma mater), who have an interest in pursuing a career in nursing.
This short poem sums up the feelings Mike’s family and friends have about him and the many lives he touched throughout his 48 years of life:
Loving and kind in all his ways,
upright and just to the end of his days;
Sincere and true in his heart and mind,
a beautiful memory he left behind.
He had a nature you could not help loving,
a heart that was purer than gold;
And to those who knew him and loved him,
his memory will never grow cold.
Tim Wilmet Memorial Scholarship
Tim Wilmet, an employee of the Bellin MRI department, and one of the first MRI techs in northeast Wisconsin, passed away on Nov. 22, 2016. In his memory, a fund has been established at The Bellin Health Foundation by Tim’s wife, Jody, along with family and friends to support educational scholarships for Radiologic Science students at Bellin College.
L.G. Wood Endowed Scholarship
The L.G. Wood Endowed Scholarship was created in honor and memory of Mr. Wood, an active business and community leader until his death in 1969. Mr. Wood was a strong believer in the value and need for education. His daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Frederick Baer, were long-time supporters of Bellin College. Patricia served on the Bellin College Board of Trustees for many years.
Virginia Zehren Memorial Endowed Scholarship
As a research scientist and educator, Virginia Florence Zehren, Ph.D., and registered pharmacist, dedicated her life to treating the sick and fostering good nutrition. She studied pharmacy at the University of Illinois-Chicago, obtaining her degree when she was just 20 years old. Too young to hold a license to practice, Virginia took a job at Kraft Foods Co. as an associate scientist. Having developed an interest in research, she enrolled in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During an era when people felt a “woman’s place was in the home,” Virginia confronted and overcame criticism and earned her doctorate in three years, while completing groundbreaking studies in the fields of food science and biochemistry. In 1954, she married a fellow Ph.D. student, Vincent Zehren, and moved to Green Bay, where the couple began their long association with the L.D. Schreiber Cheese Company. Their family eventually grew to six children.
As what later became known as a “working mother,” Virginia artfully juggled her career and domestic duties, becoming the first woman with a doctorate to be an assistant professor at St. Norbert College. Later she was also named an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Together, during the mid-1960s, the Drs. Zehren engaged in critical research. Now, decades later, the couple’s classic findings are still cited in scientific literature.
In 1968, she became a staff pharmacist at Bellin Hospital, where she worked until shortly before her death in June 1993. At Bellin, Virginia was known for her expertise and professional integrity. She took deep satisfaction from working with her colleagues and always felt a strong sense of empathy with patients. Recipients who benefit from this scholarship will serve as a continuing testament to Virginia’s belief that people should use their knowledge to improve themselves, in turn helping others. To mark Virginia’s professional accomplishments, promote her exacting personal standards, and perpetuate her strong belief that diligent study offers its own rewards, a memorial scholarship was established in her name at Bellin College.
Paul Ziemer Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The late Paul Ziemer and his loving wife, Harriet, have been longtime friends of the Bellin community. Together, they recognized the pivotal role nurses play in keeping our community strong. Former chairman and CEO of Wisconsin Public Service Corporation, Paul impacted the steady growth of this community not only through his leadership at this major company, but also through his service with diverse associations.
Bellin is among the beneficiaries of Paul’s talent. He served for many years on the Bellin Hospital and Bellin Health System board of directors. As a member of the Bellin College Board of Trustees until the time of his death, Paul shared his counsel in shaping its future. He was instrumental in making the College’s 1995 endowment campaign a reality. It is a fitting tribute that this meaningful campaign is dedicated to his memory.
Together, he and Harriet funded Ziemer Scholarships, which support nursing students in their professional service to the people in Northeastern Wisconsin. It is a logical extension of that commitment that the Paul Ziemer Memorial Scholarship was created from his memorial gifts and continued by Harriet.
Carl & Margaret Zutz Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Margaret Zutz appreciated the help she received while attending nursing school as a teenager. Having been raised by a widowed mother of three, Margaret knew she needed to create security for herself in life. Her education served her well during the time she and her husband, Carl, raised seven children.
During most of her career, Margaret worked part time in hospital bedside nursing at various institutions. She retired in 1985 from the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. In the years following, she also used her skills assisting with volunteer blood pressure screenings for 10 years at the local Blood Bank in Conover, Wis.
