Bellin College Alumni Scholarship
The Alumni Scholarship originated with a group of committed, active volunteers called the Alumni Council. The goal of the Alumni Council is to provide graduates of Bellin College with opportunities to connect with former classmates, and participate in networking opportunities and events. In addition, the Council coordinates fundraising activities for the Alumni Scholarship.

The demand for skilled healthcare workers has never been higher, nor has the cost of a quality healthcare education. The scholarship is awarded annually to financially support the needs of Bellin College undergraduate students. This year’s scholarship was made possible by the funds raised at the annual Alumni Homecoming event, the Senior Breakfast Social, general gifts from Bellin Alumni, and the generous gifts made in memory or honor of the following alumni and/or friends of Bellin College.

Violet & Jacque Schmidt Memorial Scholarship
Known as Vi by her friends, Violet was a soft-spoken, gentle lady with sparkling blue eyes and a warm, welcoming smile. The third of six children, she had a lifelong zest for learning and education. Her values were founded in faith, respect and commitment. She remained true to her positive, “can do” attitude even when challenged. Her genuine concern for others was inspiring. Vi was a dedicated friend, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed being a church secretary and community volunteer. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Vi endured various procedures and treatments for 40 years. She also met cancer three times in two decades. Although she needed to sit or ride her scooter (rolling legs, as she called them), she never felt handicapped, only optimistically challenged to find a different way to succeed. She found good in all individuals and had a special place in her heart for the nurses who helped her. She appreciated the smiles and care she received on a daily basis. Those things meant so much to her.

Jacque was a strong, determined, compassionate individual. He was a major in the U.S. Army and a World War II veteran, decorated with a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Jacque adored Vi from the moment they met at the USO in Milwaukee, and they shared almost 50 years of happiness before her passing. Jacque paid tribute to his bride by establishing the Violet Schmidt Memorial Scholarship for future nurses in 1998. His drive to develop and retain opportunities for students who are committed to excellence in nursing has continued since then. He believed strongly in helping people help themselves, so they may help others. Jacque passed away in June 2015 after reading a book, visiting with his pastor, winning a two-hour match of checkers and sharing chocolate with his family. He lived life to the fullest and considered every day to be a blessing.

“It is now our honor to give tribute to them both — two parents, one vision. Always be the best you can be. Learn each day and show compassion through the magic of a smile.” – Nancy Schwenke, daughter

Jean Vaessen Memorial Scholarship
Jean Vaessen was special to the Bellin community. As a graduate of its nursing education program, she dedicated her career to Bellin Hospital.

Jean’s caring nature will be long remembered by those who knew her. Family and friends established the Jean Miller-Vaessen Scholarship Fund at the Greater Green Bay Area Community Foundation. All memorial gifts were placed in this fund to provide a scholarship for Bellin College students. The following poem, written by Jean, reveals the essence of her loving and unselfish nature:

For those I love and for those who love me.
When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do,
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears,
Be happy that we had so many years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess
how much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown,
and all the support and kindness I have known.
So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must,
then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It’s only for a while that we must part,
so bless the memories that live within your heart.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on,
but if you need me, call and I will come…
though you can’t see or touch me, I will be near.
And if you listen with your heart,
you’ll hear all of my love around you, soft and clear…
and then…when you must come this way alone…
I’ll greet you with a smile and
‘Welcome Home’.

Through Vaessen Scholars, Jean’s memory will live on. Her many contributions to nursing, her patients, family, and friends will fondly be recalled as scholarships are awarded in her name year after year.
