Over the last couple weeks over 8,000 refugees from Afghanistan have arrived at Fort McCoy and they are now preparing for as many as 13,000. After arriving at the base, all refugees are given a medical evaluation, and many people have needed additional health care. “They’ve been through an extraordinary experience and a lot of emotional trauma, having fled under the circumstances that they had to.” None of the refugees at the base have Special Immigrant Visas, so they are undergoing immigration processes to ensure they’re ready to be settled and create new lives in the U.S. Once that immigration paperwork is completed, resettlement agencies will be called in to help. “They’re building a little bit of a community and people are processing what they’ve been through together,” an official said. “And our responsibility is to prepare them for the transition to the next chapter in their lives in America.”
With caring being one of Bellin College’s core values our hearts go out to the refugees. The college will be hosting a donation drive through the end of September. We will be collecting:
- hygiene products
- monetary donations – can be collected at the front desk in the One Stop
You can find the donation box near the entrance by the concierge desk. here are some additional resources:
Your giving is much appreciated.
Money earned will help pay for a donated tree and paver in Jaris Parnau’s memorial.

I hope your first few weeks of the semester are going well! I wanted to let you all know that BSNA will be partnering with American Red Cross to host a blood drive in just two weeks. Our goal this year is to have 42 appointments scheduled prior to the drive! We are hoping to have a high staff and student donation rate this year!
In the US, every two seconds, someone is in need of blood, and your donation alone can save up to three lives! Here is the link to sign up: https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?zipSponsor=. The link will not take you directly to the schedule but it will get you close! In the box type in the zip code 54311, then scroll down to Oct. 4th, click on the Messiah Lutheran Church link and sign up!
We still have many available slots so you will be able to choose the best time that works for you. There will be refreshments and an incentive prize there for all donors as well. If you have never donated before I have included a link to FAQs about donating blood (https://www.redcrossblood.org/faq.html#donating-blood), and if you would like more information about this blood drive, or donating blood, please send me an email! I hope you all consider donating, thank you!
