Bellin College Transitions to Direct Lending for All Federal Education Loans for 2010-2011

As mandated by the US Department of Education, all colleges must now participate in the Federal Direct Loan Program effective with the 2010-2011 financial aid award year.  Prior to 2010-2011, Bellin College participated in the FFEL Loan Program.  The two programs are nearly identical; the primary difference from the student's perspective is the source of the funds.  FFEL loan funds came from private lenders (banks, credit unions, etc); Direct Loan (DL) funds come directly from the US Department of Education.  Direct Loan are also referred to as Stafford and PLUS Loans with the same annual and aggregate maximum loan levels and eligibility criteria as the FFEL Stafford and PLUS Loans.  Because of the move to Direct Loans (DL), Bellin College students will need to complete a new Master Promissory Note (MPN) and a new entrance counseling session specific to DL.  Parents who wish to borrow a PLUS Loan will need to complete a new MPN as well.  Both of these activities may be completed at www.studentloans.gov.  Click here for more instructions on how to complete your MPN and entrance counseling session.

FAFSA Time 2010-2011

Returning or prospective college students who will be seeking financial assistance during the 2010-2011 academic year (July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011) should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  The FAFSA should be filed on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Bellin College suggests that the FAFSA be filed between January 1st and March 1st for maximum consideration, however, FAFSAs are accepted by the US Department of Education on a rolling basis throughout the academic year.  The 2010-2011 FAFSA uses 2009 federal income tax information provided by the student (and the student's parents if the student is a dependent).  Here are some helpful tips for completing the FAFSA

  • Apply as early as possible.  If income tax documents are not completed by the priority filing date, estimated tax data may be used, however, corrections will be required once the tax forms have been completed
  • All FAFSA filers must use a US Department of Education PIN number to electronically sign the on-line form.  At least one parent of a dependent student applicant must also have a PIN.  Active PIN numbers may be used every year.  To apply for a PIN or manage your PIN, go to www.pin.ed.gov
  • Be sure to list Bellin College (006639) in the College Release section of the FAFSA.  Also include the college where general education courses are being taken, if applicable, such as UWGB (003899) or SNC (003892).  Code numbers for additional colleges may be found on the FAFSA website via the on-line search option in Box 1 of the homepage
  • You may find it helpful to print the PDF version of the FAFSA on the Web Worksheet from Box 1 of the FAFSA website homepage.  This may be used as a 'cheat sheet' to gather the information you will need in order to complete the FAFSA on-line
  • If you have any questions, contact the financial aid office at Bellin College.

There are no private scholarship announcements available at this time.  Please check back periodically for updates.  Keep in mind that most private scholarship applications are made available in late Fall through early Summer for awards to be disbursed for enrollments beginning the following Fall.  For example, private scholarship applications for the 2011-2012 award year (to be disbursed beginning in Fall 2011) will arrive between November 2010 and July 2011.
